In September 2013, two Jubilee lawyers, Emmanuel Ogebe and Ann Buwalda ,traveled to visit Nigerian Christian refugees who have fled to the neighboring country of Cameroon from the terrorist onslaught on them in Borno State. Due to the active Boko Haram terror attacks taking place miles from our hotel, it was too dangerous for us to go directly to the camps. Instead, refugees traveled to meet us just across the border. According to the head of UNHCR in Nigeria, as many as 17,000 refugees are seeking asylum in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.
The team interviewed widows and others from the group of over 150 refugees who waited more than a day for our arrival. They told us that on May 25, Boko Haram insurgents first burned down three churches in Gwoza to test what the authorities would do. Since nothing was done, the terrorists attacked again and burned down another 24 churches as well as 318 Christian homes, killing several Christians. When Christian leaders pleaded with local police for help, they were told to use bows, arrows and stones to protect themselves. Consequently, Christians had to flee.
This is the first time that Christians have fled the country altogether. We met a baby, Ayuba, who was born in a refugee camp in a foreign country. We have received reports of malnutrition and people dying from snake bites. Please pray for his survival. In 2014 already, six thousand more fled in a 10 day period as the terrorists continue a weekly campaign of terror in the region from Christmas week uptil now. We read in amazement the attacks that have occured in the villages we traveled to in which over 300 Christians have been killed and more than 50 villages attacked this year already.
Jubilee would like to help them in their desperation by providing tents and camping supplies including flashlights, stoves, ponchos, solar lamps, first aid kits, portable toilets, sleeping bags and food. It is a real challenge living exposed to the elements on the hills so we are simultaneously working on repatriation and resettlement efforts.
Also in 2014, a refugee camp in Jos, Nigeria for Christians who fled house-to-house killings shut down . Sadly, 6 families went back to the violent northeast where over 100 people were killed the weekend prior. Jubilee is trying to assist those who have nowhere to go and no money to survive on. Within the group of displaced are Muslim converts who will be killed by their families if they return to the North.
We are working with a dependable local partner to build an apartment for these displaced Christians at a project cost of $21,000.
If you would like to monetarily support Jubilee’s effort to aid these refugees, please click the donate button below.
Our prayer bracelets and awareness t-shirts are another great way to support these displaced Christians. We hope these t-shirts and and bracelets will not only promote awareness but also provoke a prayer movement for the persecuted in Nigeria.
