Chunmei Wang

Name: Chunmei Wang

Country/Area of Origin: Kaiyuan City, Yunnan Province, China

Background: Wang, 57 years old, is a retired worker of the Honghe Power Supply Company. Her son currently resides in Virginia, United States. Since the persecution of Falun Gong started, Ms. Wang has been repeatedly arrested for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. In 2014, she was arrested for sharing Falun Gong information and VPN access with vendors on the street. She was jailed for three years. According to her son, their family was under constant surveillance.

Reason for Arrest:

:  On 27 May  2020, Chunmei Wang was arrested by Kaiyuan City police for talking to people about Falun Gong and was indicted on 10 June 2020. She was detained at the Honghezhou Detention Center. While her family was able to hire a lawyer for her, it was reported that her family had not been allowed to visit her. In addition, the lawyer found out that the police had fabricated evidence such as listing items Ms. Wang never owned. This implied that the police wanted to prosecute her on more serious charges. On 9 December 2020, Ms. Wang was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison and was transferred to Second Women’s Prison of Yunnan Province around late February or early March in 2021.

  • 29 May 2021: According to her son, Ms. Wang was able to talk to her husband in mid-May on the phone for one minute. Other than that, Ms. Wang was not able to share much information because of the restrictions on visiting or contacting her family.
